My Chiropractic Story

Chiropractic Saved Me...Twice

Since first grade, I had been answering that question that all adults ask kids "What do you wanna be when you grow up?" the same way.  I always said, "A doctor!"

I was well on my path studying Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology and Biochemistry at the University of Colorado in Boulder, when I started getting headaches.  Well, not just headaches - Migraines that would last for up to four days.

Can you imagine?  The same headache for days and days - just non-stop pain!  It was hard to study, hard to sleep, hard to see, hard to live, and definitely hard to concentrate in class.  This had been going on for years with no improvement. I knew my future was in jeopardy and I didn't like it.

Since I was looking at the scary possibility of neverending symptom suppression with prescription drugs (with my background in biochemistry - I knew those drugs were not good for my long term health), I finally agreed to go to my friend's chiropractor and see if he could help me.

Within two or three visits, I started feeling better.  A couple of weeks and the headaches would only last a day and the intensity was much less.  After three months, I no longer got migraines!

Amazing?  Yes!!

I was amazed and grateful and at that point I decided that that's the kind of doctor I wanted to be - a Doctor of Chiropractic.  I even took a job at my chiropractor's office just to see if it was a good match for me.  You would not believe the "miracles" I saw over that short amount of time. It was a definite fit!

Basically, the first time I went to a Chiropractor, I felt that Chiropractic saved my life and I remember telling my family in Texas exactly that.

"Well, I am so happy to hear that! But it's not the FIRST time," my mom said.  "What do you mean?" I replied, confused.

"That's not the first time you went to Chiropractor.  Don't you remember?" Mom said.  I didn't.

She reminded me of the time I jumped out of a swing in second grade, landed on my rear, and couldn't walk afterward.  The school nurse had to carry me to the office and my mother carried me into a doctor's office.

The only memory I had of that experience was

  1. hearing a doctor tell me that I "displaced two bones in my back" and
  2. the gradual improvement as I was able to race my little brother and actually win again.  (I think he liked being so much faster than me in the beginning of my care - since I was 8 and he was 4.)

You might think, "Well, her family is just one of those that went to chiropractors instead of medical doctors."  Not true.

As a matter of fact, I remember my mother quietly referring to chiropractors as "quacks" before that time - so I had no idea that the doctor that helped me walk again was a Doctor of Chiropractic.  Turns out, her father had been to a chiropractor and he insisted that she take me to a "Chiro" as he put it - after my injury that left me in so much pain that I could not take a step or even stand upright.

So, I was wrong.  College wasn't the first time Chiropractic had saved my life...getting rid of my migraines that threatened my future and my lifelong goal.  That was the SECOND time.

Who knows what my life would have been like if I never was able to walk again?  Or how bad my health would have been if those subluxations had not gotten corrected right away.  All I know, is that a Chiropractor made life much better for me as a child.

And because of all the benefits I received from Chiropractic care in my life, I became the Doctor that I always said I would be.  Now I get to "pay it forward" as I help others not only improve their health but keep vitality in their lives.  Now that's rewarding!

Dr. Kim Asks some important questions of interest to Portland residents - Chiropractor Portland Dr. Kim Asks...

What is the purpose of pain?
Pain prompts many Portland folks to begin chiropractic care. But pain isn't the problem! Pain is just how your body alerts you that a limit has been reached (or exceeded), that something isn't working right and that some type of change is needed. As a chiropractor, my job is finding the underlying cause and recommending the changes needed to bring your body back into balance.
How do most people deal with subluxations?
First, they try to ignore them. When they don't, they go to the medicine cabinet to stop their brain from feeling the symptom. Later, back surgery may be threatened. Sadly, it's not until this later stage that they consult our Portland chiropractic office. Yet, even with the delay, most are delighted by the results produced by today's chiropractic care.
